Breastfeeding Tips
The KEY to successful breastfeeding is a good latch. Position yourself comfortably, relax, and enjoy your baby.
Use the LATCH system to identify your need for assistance.
(Early success is associated with prolonged breastfeeding.)
Latch - Baby grasps breast, takes one inch of areola into mouth, tongue down, lips outwards, and rhythmic sucking
Audible - swallowing (spontaneous and frequent after the first 24 hours of birth)
Type of nipple - Nipples evert (after stimulation) and naturally shaped after feedings
Comfort - Feedings not painful; nipples intact and naturally shaped after feedings
Hold - Mom able to position and hold infant independently
